在四月二十七号, 我们在校本部的嘉庚楼举行了一场讲座 / 英语沙龙。当时现场一共有二十五到三十名参与者, 有一些直接从刚刚结束的模拟联合国活动中赶来, 但大多数参与者则是从上周的英语角中我们所分发的宣传资料上得知这次活动的。

在那天早上, 我以观察员的身份参与了模拟联合国大会。这次活动一共有四个委员会, 其中三个委员会是用英语进行的。我对其参与者良好的英语口语和听力水平印象十分深刻。

当早上的会议结束后, 模拟联合国的主席唐洁非常亲切地请我上台讲话。我对我所听到的辩论内容给了些反馈, 然后谈了一些关于绿色呼吸社团和吸烟问题的内容。我尝试着在极短的时间内让他们意识到吸烟和尼古丁上瘾是一个严重的公共健康问题, 并且尝试着告诉他们我们真的需要采取一些有力的行动。

作为厦门大学学生环保协会的代表, 我也简略地提及温室效应, 以及我们中的每一个人能为减少自己的生态足迹 (我们中的每一个对环境的影响) 所作出的努力。我向他们推荐了《被忽视的真相》这部电影, 并提供了相应的网络链接。如果你们中的某个人对这方面的信息感兴趣, 请发电子邮件至: xmuepa2007@163.com

当天下午, 当我们的讲座刚刚开始时, 我们遇到了一些困难。我们无法获得制定教室的计算机和多媒体设备的钥匙。但幸运的是, 我们的活动与模拟联合国活动非常靠近, 所以我们可以直接挪到他们刚刚腾出来的一间教室中继续我们的活动。我们真的万分感谢模拟联合国协会的支持和帮助!

另外, 我还想特别感谢一下徐东娟 (Vivian), 她不知疲倦地为我们准备此次活动的材料、设备以及宣传本次活动。我们也得到了环保协会的陈耀瑾的大力协助。她想我们提供了关于一次性筷子的展示。另外我们还要感谢韩媚 (May), 海报设计者, 以及 Bonnie, 她所制作的幻灯片为昨天的活动奠定了基础。

无烟奥运：挑战突显

在这里向大家推荐一篇“亚洲时报网络版 ”的一篇很好的文章 ,文章的内容是关于即将到来的北京奥运会, 以及中国承诺举办一届 “无烟奥运”。这篇文章虽然有些老 (是在去年6月2日发布的), 但却很重要, 因为文章中提供了很多有价值的信息。其中有几点我特别想向大家提起:

第一, 也是最具戏剧性的就是, 中国每年有大约 120 万人死于吸烟。

同时, 忽视 “二手烟” 危害的现象普遍存在:  “据一项最新的国家烟草控制调查报告显示: 只有 35% 的人意识到了被动吸烟的危害。” 文章也提到, 中国每年有 10 万不吸烟者死于被动吸烟。我曾经看过一个估算, 每九个死于吸烟的人中,就有一个是被动吸烟, 而这篇文章中的数据显示每 12 个死于吸烟的人中, 有一个是被动吸烟。不管怎样, 这些数据听起来都是令人震惊的。

中国政府每年从烟草销售中, 可以获得稳定的财政税收 (大概可占其财政收入的 7.5%), 所以在禁烟问题上, 政府面临着很大的利益冲突。这篇文章解释了我们禁烟运动中所面临的一些障碍, 正如中国国家烟草专卖局的高官张宝珍(音译)所说的:  “我们承认吸烟具有严重危害性这个事实, 但如果放弃经营烟草, 国家的稳定将受到影响。”  这也是政府官员典型的论调。事实上, 吸烟者的减少只能导致烟草企业的不稳定。当整个国家作为一个整体来运行的时候, 吸烟者的减少, 一定会令这个国家更强盛!

Lecture / English Salon

Yesterday we held a Lecture / English Salon at Jiageng Building (嘉庚楼) on the main campus.  We got about 25 or 30 participants, a few who came directly from the Model U.N. (模拟联合国) event that was just concluding, but most of the attendees had heard about it from flyers that we handed out at the English corner during the past week.

In the morning, I went to the Model U.N. conference (模拟联合国大会)  where I acted as an observer of their debates.  They had four different topics, and three of those were all in English,  and I was bowled over (very impressed) by how good their speaking and listening ability was.

After the morning session was over, the leader of the Model U.N., Leila (唐洁), graciously allowed me to get up and speak for a few minutes.  I gave them some feedback on their debates, and then talked a little bit about Green Breathing, and the smoking issue.  I tried, in a very short time, to impress on them that smoking and nicotine addiction are a huge public health problem, and that we really need to do something about it.

On behalf of Xiamen U’s Environmental Protection Association (厦门大学学生环保协会), I also mentioned a few things about global warming, and what each of us can do to reduce our ecological footprint (the impact that each of us has on the environment).  I recommended that they watch the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, and gave them the link to that movie’s website.  If any of you are interested in contacting this group, send an email to xmuepa2007@163.com.

In the afternoon, when our lecture was to begin, we had a little bit of trouble at first.  We couldn’t get the key to the computer and multimedia equipment in the classroom that we’d been assigned.  Luckily, our event was very close to the Model U.N. group’s event, and we were able to move into one of the classrooms that they had just vacated.  So, we owe a double dose of thanks to that group!

In addition, I want to thank, in particular, Vivian  (徐东娟) who was tireless in her efforts to prepare the materials, help out with the facilities, and publicize the event.  We also got some help from the EPA’s Chen Yaojin (陈耀瑾).  She provided us with some presentation materials about disposable chopsticks (一次性筷子).  Thanks also to May (韩媚) who prepared the poster, and, as always, to Bonnie, whose powerpoint file formed the basis of the presentation we gave yesterday.

Green Breathing is a student organization at Xiamen University dedicated to promoting healthy living without cigarettes and without second-hand smoke.

香烟是杀手！每年有数百万人死于吸烟 导致的肺癌等疾病。吸烟还引起抑郁、脑损、不育、阳痿等其他很多疾病。中国，3分之一的年轻男孩将最终死于吸烟 *。二手烟也是致命的，每八个死于吸烟的吸烟者都要拖上一个无辜的二手烟受害者。
Cigarettes are killers! They kill millions of people every year from horrible illnesses like lung cancer. They also cause depression, brain damage, infertility, impotence, and a host of other terrible illnesses. One in three young men in China will eventually die from smoking. Second-hand smoke is also deadly — every eight smokers who die take one non-smoker with them!

Smokefree Olympics: Challenges Ahead

There’s an excellent article at the Asia Times Online about the upcoming Olympics, and China’s pledge to make them smoke-free. This article is quite old (from June 2nd last year) but still important, and contains a lot of good information. It makes several points worth reiterating here. First and most dramatic, is that nearly 1.2 million Chinese people die from smoking every year.

Also, ignorance about the dangers of second-hand smoke is widespread: “only 35% of the people surveyed for a new national tobacco-control report were aware of the dangers of passive smoking.” It goes on to say that every year, 100,000 non-smokers are killed every year from passive smoke. I have seen an estimate that for every eight smokers who die, they take one non-smoker with them, but these statistics put that number at one non-smoker for every twelve smokers. Regardless, it’s in the same range, and the numbers are simply appalling when you think about them.

The government receives a substantial percentage of its revenue (7.5%) from the sale of tobacco, so there is a huge conflict of interest on this issue. The article makes clear some of the obstacles that our struggle is up against, quoting Zhang Baozhen, a top bureaucrat at the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, as saying “We take the fact that smoking is harmful seriously, but without cigarettes the country’s stability will be affected”. This is typical spreading of FUD. Fewer smokers could only lead to the instability of the tobacco companies. As far as the country as a whole goes, fewer smokers would certainly make it stronger.

经济学院团委开展“和谐校园、青春先行”之无烟宣传活动

3月2日，经济学院团委响应校“和谐校园、青春先行”活动的号召，联合厦大绿色呼吸协会共同在芙蓉餐厅门口开展“迎绿色奥运，创无烟校园”无烟宣传活动。

活动中，通过图片展向同学们介绍了“二手烟”的危害并发出了“共创无烟校园”的行动号召。同时，头戴红帽子、身佩绿色无烟宣传绸带、胸配绿丝带的志愿者们的身影也活跃在过往的同学们中。他们结合无烟宣传折页的发放，热情地邀请同学们参与此活动。一时间，“支持无烟活动“的签名横幅上落满同学们的名字，“我不想吸二手烟”的留言版凝聚了包括来自美国、法国等留学生在内的同学及游客们的活动感言。无烟绿丝带也作为最受同学们欢迎的活动礼品，同学们纷纷把它佩在胸前，表示对活动的支持。

据悉，经济学院将于本学期将围绕“和谐校园、青春先行”的主题开展一系列活动，通过灵活多样的活动形式贯彻学校构建和谐校园的要求。本次无烟宣传活动拉开了系列活动的序幕。

2007年5月31日，第20个世界无烟日这天，世界卫生组织高级顾问朱迪夫 ·麦龙诗迪医生（Dr. Judith Mackay），向全体无烟志愿者发来邮电，鼓励和庆祝”倡议建设无烟校园”运动。朱迪夫 ·麦龙诗迪医生（Dr. Judith Mackay）委托绿色呼吸协会，把《烟草版》（The Tobacco Atlas）中、英两个版本的著作赠送给厦门大学和厦门大学嘉庚学院图书馆。《烟草版》（The Tobacco Atlas）分中、英文两本，目前放在厦门大学漳州校区图书馆。

朱迪夫•麦龙诗迪（Dr. Judith Mackay）的简介

朱迪夫•麦龙诗迪医生现住中国香港。她是世界卫生组织的高级政策顾问，是北京中国预防医学院及香港大学社区医学部的教授。她早期任职学院医生，其后从事公共卫生。她是英国伦敦及爱丁堡皇家医学院的院士。

朱迪夫•麦龙诗迪医生曾获取众多项国际奖，包括世界卫生组织纪念奖章，泰国国王的皇家奖章，the Fries Prize for Improving Health, the Luther Terry Award for Outstanding Individual Leadership, the International Partnering for World Health Award 和亚太控烟协会的国际基金成就奖。
